Exploring the differences between Diegetic and Non-Diegetic sounds
Diegetic and Non Diegetic sounds
Diegetic sounds are unedited and it comes from the raw footage of a film on camera, it could also be recorded as an audio MP3 File. These types of audio is based on sounds that you record in real time rather then extracting them from websites or software etc.
In a film you can use these types of sounds whether when a Character speaks or when something sounds realistic and that the sounds are not exaggerated etc.
Non-Diegetic sounds do not came from the raw footage and they are added or edited in a film, for instance sound effects that are Non-Diegetic can be used for exaggerating moments like comic relief or sound that is just added in during editing before the final film.
Here is an example of the differences of between diegetic and non diegetic sound:

Video Examples:
The opening of Star wars (1977) is an example of using non-diegetic soundtrack and text. It is produced by John Williams, the music and text is specifically made for only the audience to hear and not the characters portrayed in the film. Here is a link to the first example:

The next example is from a clip in Mad Max where the film is packed with many different diegetic sounds including vehicles and explosions etc. Heres the link to the second example.

Overall Diegetic sounds are when that the characters displayed in a film are self aware of the visuals and sounds whilst diegetic sounds are often used when characters are not self aware and do not know about the sound but the audience knows etc.
Ben can you add some examples in here of both? Find a short clip on YouTube from a film that shows a good example of diegetic sound, and also one that shows a good example of non-diegetic sound and embed them here, with a brief explanation of how you think they are successful.
